The neatly folded colour Xerox copy and the almost obligatory photograph of wife and child immediately gives way that this little album is nothing more than a generous portion of home industry. This musical "macram&ecaute;' comes from Brasil, out of the living room of Tésis Arsis, who, accompanied mainly by guitar and keyboards, finds his way through four epics and one shorter track. Working in a studio all by yourself here means the use of a drum machine and because it's programmed on its own, here it means it lacks the enthusiasm and complexity that is so unique within "our" music. That's why the title track ebbs away in a characteristic style similar to that of Fonya. The sound of rising water has become so cliché over the years that instead of 13 long minutes, this track most certainly could've been ten minutes shorter. "Cemitério Dos Vivos" sounds much more dramatic when guitar and keys complement each other in order to introduce a dark and menacing sound, whereby certain parts will get close to being cinematic. This ominous feel takes turns, with intimate passages using an ambient atmosphere as a backdrop for nice guitar work. This atmosphere continues throughout "Nun Tempo So" and the final song "Hale Bop," which also comprises bombastic church organ next to some refined and well delivered rhythm changes. Now and then the name Ars Nova pops up whilst the music of Kurt Rongey also springs to mind. The end result is a nice collection of instrumentals that include enough interesting elements to probably fascinate even more when delivered by a full band.John Bollenberg
Tesis Arsis is the brainchild of Brazilian Anderson Rodrigues, who plays all instruments here, primarily guitars and keyboards. Unlike most one-man productions, the use of programmed drums and bass doesn’t take away from the overall sound. The debut Ilusoes is a 5 song all instrumental album, with all tracks except one going over the ten minute mark. There seems to be a similar feel to each of the songs, which makes me think that instead “songs” each track is a “suite”.Ron Fuchs
Anderson’s guitar playing invokes a feeling that could be compared to a style done by Steve Hackett and even Andrew Latimer. As a keyboardist, Anderson comes off more like an atmospheric player rather than a soloist or virtuoso. This is fine by me since there’s so many that feel the need to be show-offs, which most of the time take away from the song composition. One thing I’m happy about whenever listening to Ilusoes is that it’s all instrumental. Not that I have anything against vocals but most of the time, vocals can take away from the overall feel for this type of album. Anderson’s instrumentation more than makes up for the lack of vocals.
After a few listens of this album, I can whole heartedly say this is by far one of the better one-man band production that I’ve had the pleasure of listening to. It should please fans of symphonic, instrumental progressive rock.
"Ilusões" is the first record of one-man-band 'Tesis Arsis' aka Brazilian composer Anderson Rodrigues, released in 2002.The influences on "Ilusões" go from Larry 'Synergy' Fast (who is IMO the major influence for Rodrigues), for the Synth work and the overall symphonic construction, Steve Hackett for the solo guitar playing, the Italian group 'Goblin' for the organ work and the dark and 'scary' athmospheres to composer Bernard Herrman for the orchestral arrangements. All tracks, most over ten minutes, are carefully build up.Martin Horst
'Ilusões', the title track, is a good opener, alternating several themes among them a nice glockenspiel theme and some Hackett inspired guitar solos.
'Cemitério dos Vivos' is the most obiously 'Goblin' influenced track. It starts with the typical, syncopated heavy organ à la Goblin creating a horror film like athmosphere, followed by a guitar solo and a gong ponctuating the threatening rhythm. A gurgling synth and a string pad create a 'Psycho' like tension, leaving place to an organ/drum duo reminding Genesis. After another lead guitar line the opening 'Goblin' theme comes back, followed by a saw-tooth synth solo and a peaceful finale.
'Num Tempo Só' is the most 'Synergy' like track, a repetitive beautiful main theme alternates with a second theme creating a dreamlike athmosphere.
'Hale Bopp' is the most interesting track clocking in about 20 minutes. It is always difficult to keep the tension for such long tracks, but Rodrigues masters this exercise brillantely. He alternates different themes, one reminding again strongly 'Goblin' and another 'Oldfield' like theme with a great Hackett inspired guitar solo.
'Ilusões' is a brillant 'exercise de style' for a one-man-rock orchestra.
